Why is my hair suddenly shedding? Understanding telogen effluvium

Seeing a handful of hair in the shower or noticing that your ponytail feels smaller can be unsettling. Even when shedding is temporary, the worry it causes is real. You deserve an explanation and a plan, not simply reassurance that it is “just stress.”

One common explanation for sudden shedding is telogen effluvium. The good news is that this condition usually improves. The first step is making sure it is the right diagnosis.

What is telogen effluvium?

Hair follicles cycle through periods of growth and rest. Telogen effluvium occurs when more hairs than usual enter the resting phase and subsequently shed. It generally causes shedding throughout the scalp rather than isolated bald patches. The follicles are not permanently destroyed, and new hair can continue to grow.

Why does shedding start months after a trigger?

Hair responds on a delay. Shedding often begins about two to four months after the event that disrupted the hair cycle. You may already feel physically recovered when your hair starts falling out.

Potential triggers include childbirth, fever or illness, surgery, significant emotional stress, rapid weight loss, restrictive dieting, and certain medication or hormonal changes. Thyroid disorders and nutritional deficiencies may also contribute. Sometimes no clear trigger is identified. If you suspect a medication, discuss it with your prescribing clinician before making changes.

How long does recovery take?

Acute telogen effluvium commonly involves several months of increased shedding. As the trigger resolves, shedding usually settles and fullness gradually returns. Many people notice recovery over six to nine months, although restoring the length and volume of longer hair can take additional time.

Shedding lasting longer than six months is considered chronic and warrants reassessment for ongoing triggers or another condition. Telogen effluvium can also coexist with female or male pattern hair loss, which may need its own treatment plan.

How do we find the cause?

Evaluation starts with your timeline, health history, medication changes, nutrition, and a scalp examination. A gentle hair-pull test may help assess active shedding. Blood tests can be selected based on your history, including tests for iron deficiency or thyroid dysfunction. A scalp biopsy is rarely needed for straightforward telogen effluvium, but may help when the diagnosis is uncertain.

At NorCal Hair Doctor™, my approach is diagnosis, stabilization, and then restoration. Before discussing ways to improve density, I want to understand what is driving the change and whether more than one condition is present.

What can you do while your hair recovers?

Many cases improve without a procedure or prescription. Addressing an underlying medical problem or confirmed nutritional deficiency is more useful than assuming every person needs a hair supplement. Aim for adequate nutrition, including protein, and handle your hair gently. Limit tight hairstyles, harsh chemical processing, and excessive heat.

It is understandable to want to act immediately. But a personalized plan should explain what each recommendation is intended to do, how we will assess progress, and what improvement is realistic. You should not feel pressured to purchase a treatment simply because the shedding is frightening.

When should you seek an evaluation?

You do not have to wait six months to ask for help. Schedule an evaluation if shedding is substantial, persistent, or accompanied by visible thinning. Patchy loss, a progressively widening part, or scalp redness, scaling, burning, or pain also deserves assessment rather than an automatic assumption of telogen effluvium.

Temporary does not mean easy. My goal is to help you understand what is happening, address what we can, and follow your recovery with realistic expectations.
